Donations to the SJSU Math Department

The San Jose State Mathematics Department gratefully acknowledges those alumni and friends who have donated to the department this year.  Given the current state of the California budget it will likely be a tough year budget-wise for San Jose State and the Math Department.  Any donations we receive from alumni and friends will be appreciated even more than usual this year.   With budget cuts, departments must do more with less.  We are not sufficiently funded for small capital improvements, equipment, recruitment, colloquium series, and a myriad of other activities that make up academic life.  Departments are paying for university services that used to be provided.    Moving filing cabinets, hanging bulletin boards, changing or installing locks, installing a telephone have become nontrivial  expenses. The Mathematics Department would make good use of donations to its discretionary fund.  Friends of the Math Department who want to make a donation that can be used to help with any of the various activities and projects that are supported by the Math Dept. are encouraged to make a donation to the SJSU Tower Foundation's Math Department Discretionary Account or to the Advancement Council.   If you prefer you can specify on your check a particular Math Dept. activity that you would like to support like 1) the Math Dept. scholarship fund (or one of our other scholarship funds), 2) the Problem of the Week competition, 3) the Putnam Exam prize fund, 4) the Math Dept. colloquium series, 5) the Math Dept. student research fund (supporting student research, student travel to conferences to give presentations, etc.), and various outreach activities that are partially supported by the Math Department, 6 San Jose Math Circle, 7) Bay Area Mathematical Adventures (BAMA), 8) Math Field Day, 9) Mathcounts, 10) EYH (Expanding Your Horizons).  Checks can be sent to the Math Dept. Chair, San Jose State University, San Jose, CA 95192-0103.  Make the checks out to San Jose State University and on the memo line or the lower left hand corner of your check please write the fund or activity you would like to donate to.

Emeritus Faculty

The San Jose State University Math Department greatly appreciates its past faculty members who's hard work helped make our department into what it is today.  The following link contains a listing of the Math Department Emeritus Faculty.  Contact Professor Jackson (jackson@math.sjsu.edu) if he inadvertently left you off the list.  Any retired math department faculty member who is not FERPing can request official emeritus status.  One requests Emeritus status from one's Dean, who then writes to the Provost, who then writes to the President. The official letter granting emeritus status is sent by the President.  The required form can be found at the following link http://www.sjsu.edu/provost/forms/#emeritus .

San Jose State University's 150th Anniversary Celebration

San Jose State University is the oldest public school of higher education in the state of California.  It started in 1857 as Minn's Evening Normal School training teachers first at its location in San Francisco and then in San Jose.  San Jose State went through a series of name changes, San Jose State Normal School, San Jose State Teacher's College, San Jose State College, California State University, San Jose, until 1974 when it finally became San Jose State University.  In the spring of 2007, San Jose State University celebrated its 150th anniversary.  A Founder's Day celebration was held on May 4, 2007 and a variety of other events were held throughout the spring.  To find out more about San Jose State's history and its 150th anniversary celebration, visit the official San Jose State University 150th anniversary web site at

Past Math Department Scholarship Winners (1977-2007)

The Math Department is lucky to have several scholarship funds, which fund yearly scholarships for some of our most deserving students.  Every year we offer a Fuller scholarship, Dieckmann scholarship, Byrd scholarship, Math Department scholarship, Morton scholarship, Hoggatt prize, Billik prize, and a variety of other awards.  Check the link below to see the Math Dept. scholarship winners for the last 30+ years.  If you would like to make a contribution to any of these scholarship funds send a check to the Math Dept. and write the fund you would like to support on the bottom of your check.  This will allow us to give larger awards to the deserving students who receive these scholarships each year or in some cases it will allow us to give scholarship awards to more students.
