Math classes are relatively small, about 25-35 for lower division classes, 15-25 for upper division classes, and 5-15 for graduate classes.  Many courses are offered throughout the day to accommodate the schedules of our students.  Some upper division (numbered from 100 - 199)  and graduate math (numbered 200 and above) courses are not offered every semester.  To help plan students' schedules, a list of expected course offerings is available online.  The schedules are only approximate and courses with low enrollment are subject to cancellation, which can cause offerings to be less frequent.  We urge the students to register early for classes, especially those that are offered infrequently so that they are less likely to be cancelled.  To petition for a course to be offered at a particular time, submit a written request to the department chair with the names, student ID numbers, and emails of 10 students for an undergraduate class.  Only 5 students are needed for a graduate class.

Precalculus and Calculus

Nearly all students taking Pre-calculus (Math 19) or Calculus I (Math 30 and Math 30P) need to  take the Mathematics Placement Exam.  The score on the placement exam determines eligibility for the class.   Register for the exam online or at the math office.   Information on the special registration procedures for these classes as well as a list of exceptions from the placement exam are available on-line.  Of the two different Calculus I classes we offer , the 5-unit  Math 30P Calculus I with Pre-Calculus is the best choice for most students.  The 3-unit Math 30 Calculus I class is designed for highly motivated and well-prepared students.

Prerequisites

It is important that students registered in our courses have the necessary background to succeed.  The prerequisites for each course are listed on the course listings that are found in the SJSU catalog.  A prerequisite map is also available online.

Help with coursework

Students should seek help from the faculty by going to office hours and communicating with them in person or through email.  AMP workshops are also available for some classes.  The Learning Assistance Resource Center (LARC) provides free tutoring for SJSU students.

Transfer Credit

Information regarding equivalencies between courses at SJSU and those at other institutions can be found on our Local Community College Course Equivalencies Sheet, the Articulation Office of SJSU or through ASSIST.    ASSIST provides information about receiving credit at a California public university for courses completed at a California Community College and how those courses can be applied toward your academic goals when you transfer from a California Community College to a CSU or UC campus.  These lists are not complete.  Courses not on any of these lists are evaluated by the undergraduate coordinator.   Transfer students should see their major advisor as soon as they transfer to avoid unnecessarily repeating courses or delaying graduation.
