PART TIME INSTRUCTORS

The department hires part-time faculty to teach math, math education and developmental math classes.  The department maintains an ongoing applicant pool for lecturers.  The department also often needs experienced high school teachers for student teacher supervision.  Though applications are accepted at any time,  it is best to apply for a teaching position during the first month of the semester before you would like to start teaching.

Send a cover letter of interest to:
  Department of Mathematics
  San Jose State University
  San Jose, CA  95192-0103

If you are hired, a transcript and 3 letters of recommendation will be required.

TEACHING ASSOCIATES (TA's)

The department  hires graduate students as Teaching Associates every semester.   Though applications are accepted at any time, if possible, it is best to apply for a TA position during the first month of the semester before you would like to start teaching.  To be considered for a TA position, you must be admitted as a classified graduate student in the Mathematics department.  Fill out the application form and submit it along with 3 letters of recommendation to the department office.

Eligibility
To be eligible, graduate students shall be enrolled, and in "classified status" in a graduate program of study, for a minimum of three units of coursework per semester. For one semester only, students who have already served as a TA who are enrolled in fewer than three units are also eligible for employment. If fewer than three units, a student should be enrolled in a least one unit or be in the process of completing a Satisfactory Progress (SP) grade. Appointment as a TA shall be limited to a total of 4 semesters.

Entitlement
Matriculated graduate students who are appointed as Teaching Associates at San Jose State University shall be granted fee waivers, during the semester that they are teaching, of mandatory campus miscellaneous fees and the mandatory state university fees.
         1)  If a TA has a fractional hiring time of 0.1 to 0.2, s/he will be entitled to a fee waiver covering 1.0 to 6.0 units per semester they are teaching.
         2)  If a TA has a fractional hiring time of above 0.2, s/he will be entitled to a fee waiver covering 6.1 or more units per semester they are teaching.

STUDENT ASSISTANTS

The department also hires graders, lab monitors, and student assistants on an ongoing basis.   Starting in Fall 2008 the department will be hiring Math 19W workshop facilitators, who will help students work together in groups on solving precalculus problems. Prospective graders, lab monitors and workshop facilitators are encouraged to apply before the beginning of the semester during which they would like to work, but in any event no later than the second week of the semester.

TUTORS

We often receive inquiries  about private tutors.  The math office also keeps a list of students looking for tutoring jobs.  If you are interested,  go to the math office to add your name to the list.  The department does not endorse the tutors on this list.  It is merely a convenience  that we provide for the students.  Tutors are also hired every semester at the Learning Assistance Resource Center (LARC)

OTHER STUDENT POSITIONS

Jobs and internships at  local companies are also available for  students while they attend San Jose State.  Contact the SJSU Career Center for help in looking for an internship.
