PART
TIME INSTRUCTORS
The
department hires part-time faculty to teach math, math
education and developmental math classes. The
department maintains an ongoing applicant pool for
lecturers. The department also often needs
experienced high school teachers for student teacher
supervision. Though applications are accepted at
any time, it is best to apply for a teaching position
during the first month of the semester before you would
like to start teaching.

TEACHING ASSOCIATES (TA's)
The
department hires graduate students
as Teaching Associates every semester.
Though applications are accepted at any time, if
possible, it is best to apply for a TA position during
the first month of the semester before you would like to
start teaching. To be considered for a TA position, you
must be admitted as a classified graduate student in the
Mathematics department. Fill out the
application form and submit it along with 3 letters of
recommendation to the department office.

Eligibility
To be eligible, graduate students shall be enrolled, and
in "classified status" in a graduate program of study,
for a minimum of three units of coursework per semester.
For one semester only, students who have already served
as a TA who are enrolled in fewer than three units are
also eligible for employment. If fewer than three units,
a student should be enrolled in a least one unit or be
in the process of completing a Satisfactory Progress
(SP) grade. Appointment as a TA shall be limited to a
total of 4 semesters.
Entitlement
Matriculated graduate students who are appointed as Teaching Associates at San Jose State
University shall be granted fee waivers, during the
semester that they are teaching, of mandatory campus
miscellaneous fees and the mandatory state university
fees.
1) If a TA has a
fractional hiring time of 0.1 to 0.2, s/he will be
entitled to a fee waiver covering 1.0 to 6.0 units per
semester they are teaching.
2) If a TA has a
fractional hiring time of above 0.2, s/he will be
entitled to a fee waiver covering 6.1 or more units per
semester they are teaching.

STUDENT ASSISTANTS
The department also hires
graders,
lab monitors, and student assistants on an ongoing
basis. Starting in Fall 2008 the department will be hiring Math 19W workshop facilitators, who will help students work together in groups on solving precalculus problems. Prospective graders, lab
monitors and workshop facilitators are encouraged to apply before the beginning of
the semester during which they would like to work, but
in any event no later than the second week of the
semester.

TUTORS
We often receive
inquiries about private tutors. The math
office also keeps a list of students looking for
tutoring jobs. If you are interested, go to
the math office to add your name to the list. The
department does not endorse the tutors on this list.
It is merely a convenience
that we provide for the students. Tutors are also hired every semester at the
Learning Assistance Resource Center (LARC)
