SJSU CREDIT BY EXAM
Workshop Information - Math 19W, Math 30W, Math 31W
MATHEMATICS PLACEMENT EXAM:
Nearly all Students who wish to enroll in Math 19, Math
30,
or Math 30P are required to take the Mathematics Placement Examination (MPE). This exam does
not exempt students from the Entry Level Math
(ELM) exam. The Math Placement Exam (MPE) covers material from four years of
college prep math, specifically: College Algebra, Trigonometry, and
Properties of Elementary Functions. Some review problems are
posted at

. Please read the following
instructions carefully. You MUST sign up for the exam
PRIOR to the day of the exam (MPE Schedule). Registrations are not allowed on
the same day as the exam.
EXCEPTIONS:
If you have passed
Math 8 with a C- or better, then you should be able
to go directly to my.sjsu.edu and
register for Math 19 and 19W (workshop). If you have passed Math 19
with a C or better, then you should be able to go
directly to my.sjsu.edu and
register for Math 30P and 30W. If you have passed Math 19
with a B or better, then you should be able to go directly to my.sjsu.edu
and register for Math 30 (Math 30W workshop is optional for Math 30
students).
Exemptions from the MPE for getting into Math 30 or 30P are given to students
who received a score of 3 or higher on the Calculus AP test or to students who have taken Calculus
at a community college or university.
These students need to submit their AP Score Result or a transcript. DO NOT SEND THE
SCORE RESULTS OR THE TRANSCRIPTS to Admissions and Records. Have the
AP Score Result or transcripts sent to you and attach them to the
Course Request form and send it to:

Exemptions from the MPE for getting into Math 19 are given
to students who were exempt from ELM by virtue of SAT or ACT scores. In this case, contact the Math Department office.
You may also download the Precalculus Course Request form below and
either mail it or fax (408-924-5080) to us.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
Students who are repeating a class or who are taking
the class through Open University/Continuing Education CANNOT register before the first
day of class. These students should attend a section of the class and the instructor
will have further instructions.
Note: Passing the ELM or the Developmental
Classes does NOT exempt you from taking the MPE.
