Precalculus and Calculus Workshops Math 19, 30P, and 31 will require concurrent enrollment in workshops (Math 19W, Math 30W, Math 31W)
To be eligible for Precalculus Math 19 you must 1) take the Precalculus portion of the Mathematics Placement Exam (MPE) and receive a score of 18 out of 32 points or higher or 2) receive a score of 550 or higher on the SAT or a score of 23 or higher on the ACT or 3) receive a grade of C- or higher in Math 8 College Algebra and Trigonometry (or an equivalent community college course).
For more information about Precalculus, Calculus or the MPE visit the math office (MacQuarrie Hall 308) or go to our website http://www.math.sjsu.edu/%7Ecalculus/.
Math 19 Precalculus Course Description: Preparation for calculus:
polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic and trigonometric
functions; analytic geometry. Prerequisite: Satisfaction of ELM
requirement; Satisfactory score on the Mathematics Placement Exam,
or a grade of "C-" or higher in MATH 8, or a score of 550 or higher
on the Mathematics Section of the SAT, or a score of 23 or higher on
the ACT. Concurrent enrollment in Math 19W Precalculus Workshop
required except for students receiving a score of 23 or higher on
the MPE or a B or higher in Math 8. 5 units ABC/NC Grading Math 19W Precalculus Workshop Course description: A course designed to help all students excel in Math 19. Students work in groups on challenging problems to help them understand precalculus concepts more deeply and lay the groundwork for success in precalculus and in future math courses. Concurrent enrollment in Math 19 required. 1 unit CR/NC grading In Fall 2009, students who register for Math 19 Precalculus are required to register for Math 19W Precaclulus workshop at the same time. If you wish to drop Math 19W and you received a B or higher grade in Math 8 or a sufficiently high grade (23/32 or higher) on the math placement exam, you must go to Math office and fill out the appropriate from. In the past students who have participated regularly in precalculus and calculus workshops have passed their courses more than 75% of the time while students who have not taken workshops only pass their courses about 40% of the time so all Math 19 students are strongly encouraged to take Math 19W. In the workshops, students work in small groups solving problems, to help build their skill and confidence in problem solving. Workshops in Precalculus and Calculus have been shown to help students succeed in these difficult courses. Students in Math 19W are encouraged to form student study groups and continue working on their precalculus homework together outside of class.
Students receiving a score of 18-22 on the MPE are required to register for both Math 19 and Math 19W.
Students receiving a score of 23-32 on the MPE or a grade of B or higher in Math 8 (or an equivalent community college course) are required to register for both Math 19 and Math 19W online. Even though we encourage all Math 19 students to take Math 19W these students may drop Math 19W by getting permission at the Math Dept. office (MacQuarrie Hall 308).
Calculus I There are two versions of calculus I at San Jose State, Math 30P Calculus I with Precalculus is a 5-unit version of calculus I which allows for some extra review of precalculus while you are learning the material in calculus I. Math 30 Calculus I is a 3-unit course which covers the same material in calculus I without the extra reviews of precalculus and is mainly intended for well-prepared and highly motivated students. MATH 030P Calculus I with PrecalculusCourse Description: Selected topics in precalculus. Introduction to calculus including limits, continuity, differentiation, applications, and introduction to integration. Graphical, algebraic and numerical methods of solving problems. Prerequisite: Satisfaction of ELM requirement; Satisfactory score on the Mathematics Placement Exam, or MATH 19 or MATH 19A (with a grade of "C" or better). Corequisite: MATH 30W required except for students receiving a sufficiently high score on the MPE or a B or higher in MATH 19. 5 Units
To be eligible for Math 30P Calculus I with Precalculus (5 units) you must 1) take the Precalculus and Calculus portions of the Mathematics Placement Exam (MPE) and receive a score of 22 out of 32 points or higher on the Precalculus Readiness Exam and a score of 14 out of 25 points or higher on the Calculus Readiness Exam or 2) receive a grade of C or higher in Math 19 or an equivalent community college precalculus course or 3) receive a score of 3 or higher on the AB Calculus AP Test.
MATH 030W Calculus I WorkshopCourse Description: A course designed to help all students excel in Calculus I. Students work in groups on challenging calculus problems to help them understand the concepts in Calculus I more deeply and lay the groundwork for success in future math courses. Corequisite: MATH 30 or MATH 30P required. 1 unit C/NC grading
Students who register for Math 30P Calculus I with Precalculus are required to register for Math 30W Calculus I workshop at the same time. If you wish to drop Math 30W and you received a B or higher grade in Math 19, you must go to Math office and fill out the appropriate from. In the past students who have participated regularly in precalculus and calculus workshops have passed their courses more than 75% of the time, while students who have not taken workshops only pass their courses about 40% of the time, so all Math 30P students are strongly encouraged to take Math 30W. In the workshops, students work in small groups solving problems, to help build their skill and confidence in problem solving.
MATH 030 Calculus ICourse Description: Introduction to calculus including limits, continuity, differentiation, applications and introduction to integration. Graphical, algebraic and numerical methods of solving problems. Prerequisite: Satisfaction of ELM requirement; Satisfactory score on the Mathematics Placement Exam, or MATH 19 or MATH 19A (with a grade of "B" or better to waive the placement exam). Units 3
To be eligible for Math 30 Calculus I (3 units) you must 1) take the Precalculus and Calculus portions of the Mathematics Placement Exam (MPE) and receive a score of 26 out of 32 points or higher on the Precalculus Readiness Exam and a score of 20 out of 25 points or higher on the Calculus Readiness Exam or 2) receive a grade of B or higher in Math 19 or an equivalent community college precalculus course or 3) receive a score of 3 or higher on the AB Calculus AP Test.
Students in Math 30 Calculus I are recommended but not required to take Math 30W Calculus I workshop.
MATH 031 Calculus IICourse Description: Definite and indefinite integration with applications. Sequences and series. Graphical, algebraic and numerical methods of solving problems. Prerequisite: MATH 30 or MATH 30P (with a grade of "C-" or better). 4 units
To be eligible for Calculus II Math 31 (4 units) you must 1) receive a grade of C- or higher in Math 30P or Math 30 or 2) pass the AP Calculus AB Exam with a score of 3 or higher. With a score of 3 you are eligible for Math 30P, Math 30 or Math 31, though we recommend that you start with Math 30. With a score of 4 or higher Math 31 is recommended.
MATH 031W Calculus II WorkshopCourse Description: A course designed to help all students excel in Calculus II. Students work in groups on challenging calculus problems to help them understand the concepts in Calculus II more deeply and lay the groundwork for success in future math courses. Corequisite: MATH 31 required. Grading C/NC 1 Unit
Students who register for Math 31 Calculus II are required to register for Math 31W Calculus II workshop at the same time. If you wish to drop Math 31W, you must go to Math office and fill out the appropriate from. In the past students who have participated regularly in precalculus and calculus workshops have passed their courses more than 75% of the time while students who have not taken workshops only pass their courses about 40% of the time so all Math 31 students are strongly encouraged to take Math 31W. In the workshops, students work in small groups solving problems, to help build their skill and confidence in problem solving.
To be eligible for Calculus III Math 32 (3 units) you must 1) receive a grade of C- or higher in Math 31 or 2) pass the AP Calculus BC Exam with a score of 3 or higher.
