Math Department Scholarships and Awards

The Math Department gives the following scholarships and awards every year, 1) Hoggatt prize, 2) Fuller scholarship, 3) Dieckmann scholarship, 4) Math Department scholarship, 5) Morton award,  (to a prospective teacher), 6) Byrd scholarship, 7) Bradshaw award (to the best Math Dept. TA), 8) Problem of the Week prizes, 9) Putnam Exam prizes, and 10) the Billik prize in Analysis.  The Math Dept. is blessed that the gifts of past donors have allowed us to fund such a variety of scholarships and awards.  We encourage the past recipients of these awards to make contributions to support the Franklyn B. Fuller scholarship fund, the Richard H. C. Dieckmann scholarship fund, the Lucille R. Morton scholarship fund, the Paul Byrd scholarship fund, the Kenneth Bradshaw scholarship fund, the Problem of the Week prize fund, and the Putnam Exam prize fund.  Making contributions to these funds will allow us to offer larger awards (or more awards) in the future to the many deserving recipients who apply for Math Department scholarships each year.  The 2008 scholarship and awards winners were 1st place POW undergrad division Siddhartha Kanungo, 1st place POW grad division, Michael Pejic, Putnam Prize winners, Siddhartha Kanungo 1st place, Cuong Dong 2nd place, Phuong Ho 3rd place, Hoggatt prize Siddhartha Kanungo, Bradshaw scholarship Simon Ward, Math Dept. scholarship Chris Fowler, Fuller scholarships Anita Chinthalapati and Peter Hansen, Dieckmann scholarship Sejal Dharia, Byrd scholarship Michael Pejic, Morton scholarship Leslie Stamm, Billik prize Jason Smith.  This year our scholarship winners will all receive awards of $500.

Descriptions of Scholarships

The Department of Mathematics Scholarships were first awarded in 1983.  Each year, mathematics faculty members contribute to this fund to honor academic achievement and encourage further academic studies.

The Richard C. Dieckmann Scholarship was first awarded in 1983.  Professor Dieckmann was a highly regarded member of the mathematics faculty here from 1946-1972.  Richard Henry Cabot Dieckmann held four degrees from U.C. Berkeley, ranging from an A.B. in mathematics and French to a PhD in mathematics, with an interpolated law degree.  Upon his death at age 78 in 1982, he endowed a scholarship fund by a gift from his estate to reward and encourage academic excellence by a math major.

The Franklin B. Fuller Scholarship fund was established in 1977 to honor the memory of a past chair of the mathematics department.  Franklin Belmont Fuller, whose father was police chief in San Jose in 1915.  Affectionately known as a “prune picker” due to his local roots, Professor Fuller also has local roots in the Department having earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees  at San Jose State in the 1940's.  He then got a Ph.D. degree at Stanford and worked at NASA Ames Research Center from the late 50's until 1970.  He maintained ties with the department throughout his career by teaching here part-time while working for NASA.  After retiring from NASA in 1970, Professor Fuller came to teach full-time at San Jose State, and became department chair in 1974.  After his death in 1977, many generous contributions were made to this scholarship fund by his coworkers at NASA as well as his friends in this department.

The Paul F. Byrd Award was first awarded in 1994.  Professor Byrd was a distinguished applied mathematician and faculty member in the Department of Mathematics for 30 years.  He is best remembered for his knowledge of applied mathematics, his ability to learn independently, his ability and love for solving monthly problems, his readiness and willingness to transmit his knowledge to students and colleagues, and his capacity to fight for social justice.  His former student, Kent Okasaki was the prime instigator in establishing the scholarship in honor of his thesis advisor using his stock from his HP stock option plan to endow the scholarship.  Professor Byrd’s  family  and colleagues  have also contributed to the establishment of this annual award in his memory.

The Hoggatt Award for Outstanding Research Potential is the most distinguished of all of our scholarship awards.  Since 1981, this prize has been awarded each spring to a graduating senior  with the greatest research potential, based on faculty recommendations. This award is named for Verner E. Hoggatt, a former faculty member founded a mathematical  journal called the Fibonacci Quarterly. He supervised a record number of 39 theses in the department.  (39 by the way is 3 times the 7th Fibonacci number.)  One of his students, Marjorie Bicknell-Johnson writes that Vern Hoggatt particularly encouraged young women in mathematics.  This, despite the fact that he made her rewrite her first paper claiming it sounded as if it were written for the Ladies Home Journal.   The Fibonacci Association  funds this award every year in honor of its founder.
