History of the San Jose State Math Department

A list of Math Department Emeritus is given in the table below. With sadness we announce the passing of two Math Dept Emeritus faculty, Britt J. Schweitzer and Lester H. Lange. Britt J. Schweitzer passed away on May 8, 2009, in Morgan Hill. Schweitzer taught mathematics at San Jose State from 1960-1988. After retirement, he played the viola with the South Valley Symphony Orchestra, and he also enjoyed playing the harpsicord and the piano.
Lester H. Lange, a former chair of the Math Department and a longtime dean of the College of Science at San Jose State passed away on March 16, 2010. His obituary can be found at http://www.mlml.calstate.edu/announcements/news/3-17-10-dr-lester-h-lange-1924-2010.
Math Department Emeritus Faculty, Robert Wrede died Dec. 5, 2011 at the age of 85 in Aptos, CA where he lived with his wife Jean. Dr. Wrede received a PhD in Applied Math from the University of Indiana and served at San Jose State from 1955-1994.
Dr. Anthony Lovaglia died at the age of 88 on Nov. 30, 2011. He receivbed his PhD in Mathematics from the University of California at Berkeley and served at San Jose State from 1951-1986.
Dr. Leonard Bristow died at Colorado Springs in 2002. He received his PhD from the University of Illinois in 1930 and taught at San Jose State from 1957-1969.
Dr. Rodney Ebon Anderson passed away Jan. 25, 2013 in Woodland, CA at the age of 92. He received his Ed.D in 1956 from Indiana University and taught at San Jose State from 1958-1990.

At the present time five Math Department faculty, Joanne Becker (1984- ), Michael Beeson (1981- ), Les Foster (1981- ), Ken Kellum (1981- ) and Ed Schmeichel (1979- ) have retired and entered the Faculty Early Retirement Program (FERP).
