Advising for Mathematics Subject Matter Preparation

Students wishing to become secondary school mathematics teachers must pass the mathematics subject matter competency before entering the credential program.  You should see an an advisor (see the list of advisors below, advisors are assigned by looking at the last two digits of your social security number).  There are two ways to complete the subject matter competency (read the math education advising packet below for the full details and talk with you advisor if you have any questions).  One of the ways to complete the subject matter competency is to complete all 16 courses on the checklist below and the second way is to complete 5-6 courses and pass the CSET exam (for information about the CSET exam check the websites given below).  You will need to fill out the Information Sheet and the Checklist (see below) with the help of your advisor but in most cases it helps if you at least can get started on it before meeting with your advisor.  It is usually best to contact your advisor by email to schedule an appointment.  After meeting with your advisor you will be scheduled for a screening interview during which a subject matter competency report will be filled out.  When the requirements listed on the subject matter competency report are completed you can apply to the single subject credential program.
