Using and Understanding Mathematics by Jeffrey Bennett and William Briggs.
Prerequisites:
Passage of the ELM test.
SJSU
Drop Policy: After Tues. Sept. 14 students can only drop a class for a serious
and compelling reason. Written
documentation is required. The last
day to add is Sept. 21.
Course
Description: In this course we will study some basic topics in mathematics that
we hope you will find 1) interesting and 2) useful.
This course satisfies the GE mathematics requirement and we hope that it
will help you problem solve and think effectively while at the same time being
more interesting than most of your previous math classes. We also expect you to learn how to use technology effectively
(a calculator and a computer spreadsheet) in solving problems.
Grading:
Daily homework and reading assignments will be given but not collected.
Seven assignments each worth 10 points will be collected (6 online
chapter quizzes and a 1-2 page report). Students
are encouraged to do their chapter quizzes online at www.coursecompass.com
(course = jackson48693) though you can turn in a hard copy if you prefer.
You will need an access code (it should be included with a new book or
you can obtain one online for $30). Online
quizzes can be repeated to improve your grade.
Each student will also be required to write a report (1-2 pages).
Your report can discuss data on a topic of your choice using at least two
statistical graphs or charts. On
many days in class you will spend about 15-25 minutes in class working in a
group on one or more problems. Each
in-class assignment will be worth 3 points.
Three in-class quizzes and 3 midterms will be given at 2-3 week intervals
throughout the semester. Cheating
is a serious offense so don’t even think about it.
Any makeup midterms (or quizzes) should be scheduled before the midterm
is given. If you get sick or
detained on the day of the midterm call my office and leave a message.
A comprehensive final exam will be given and it will be worth 110 points.
