Text: Discrete Mathematics with Applications, by Susanna Epp, 2nd edition.

Prerequisites: Math 19 with a grade of C- or better or passage of the calculus placement test or instructor consent.

SJSU Drop Policy: After Tues. Feb. 17 students can only drop a class for a serious and compelling reason.  Written documentation is required.

Course Description: In this course we will study the basic topics in discrete mathematics (chapters 1-10) and their applications in computer science and other areas of mathematics.  Other discrete math courses offered in our department are Math 142 Combinatorics, and Math 179 Graph Theory.  This course is required for all mathematics and computer science majors.

Grading:  Daily homework assignments will be given but not collected.  At the end of each chapter a few special problems will be collected and discussed.  Six assignments each worth 20 points will be collected.  Students are allowed and even encouraged to work together in groups, on their homework assignments.  Since the homework assignments are usually discussed in class immediately after they are turned in, no late assignments can be accepted.  Roughly every 3 weeks you will have a quiz or a midterm (3 quizzes each worth 20 points, 2 midterms each worth 60 points).  Usually one page of notes will be allowed for each exam.  Cheating is a serious offense so don’t even think about it.  Any makeup midterms (or quizzes) should be scheduled before the midterm is given.  If you get sick or detained on the day of the midterm call my office and leave a message.  A comprehensive final exam will be given and it will be worth 100 points.

6 Homework Assignments    120 points

2 Midterms                            120 points

3 Quizzes                                60 points

Final                                      100 points

Total                                      400 points

The Juggling Club: The Juggling Club meets Wednesdays, 11:30-12:30, out on the Tower Hall quad (or under MacQuarrie Hall if it rains). Everyone is invited to come out and learn to juggle, or to practice and improve their juggling.
