Placement into a Developmental Math and writing courses is mandatory for all first-time frosh and lower division transfer students who score less than 50 on the ELM or less than 151 on the EPT.

Course Descriptions:


All of the courses in the Developmental Math program cover a combined elementary and intermediate algebra curriculum.  The content is covered in several formats including both a one and a two-semester review.  Students who complete any of the following will have satisfied the ELM requirement and be eligible to enroll in a GE math course.  An additional placement test is required by the Math Department for those wishing to take Math 19 or Math 30.

Courses that complete the ELM requirement:

o Math 3A or 6A plus Math 3B or 6B
o Math 3R
o Math 6L
o Math 6D



Math 3A  Intensive Learning Mathematics I
A first course in a two-semester sequence of courses designed to review topics from elementary and intermediate algebra.   Four hours lecture per week. 
CR/NC    4 non-baccalaureate units

   
Math 3B  Intensive Learning Mathematics II
The second course in a two-semester sequence of courses designed to review topics from elementary and intermediate algebra.  A credit grade in Math 3A or 6A is required to enroll in Math 3B.   Four hours lecture per week.   Passing Math 3B satisfies the ELM requirement.
CR/NC    4 non-baccalaureate units 

   
Math 3R  Intensive Learning Mathematics
This course is offered only in the spring for students who have only one semester left in the time limit to complete remediation and have not passed either Math 3A or 6A.  It covers all of the material in both the first and second half of the course.   Five hours lecture per week.   Passing Math 3R satisfies the ELM requirement.

Math 6A  Entry Level Mathematics I
A first course in a two-semester sequence of courses designed to review topics from elementary and intermediate algebra.  A credit grade in Math 6A is required to enroll in Math 6B.  Lecture two hours / Lab two hours per week.  Offered in the fall only.  Students needing Math 6A may take Math 3A.
CR/NC    3 non-baccalaureate units.


Math 6B  Entry Level Mathematics II
The second course in a two-semester sequence of courses designed to review topics from elementary and intermediate algebra.  A credit grade in Math 6A is required to enroll in Math 6B.  Lecture two hours / Lab two hours per week.  Offered in the spring only.  Students needing Math 6B may take Math 3B.   Passing Math 6B satisfies the ELM requirement.

Math 6L  Entry Level Mathematics
A complete review of topics from elementary and intermediate algebra.  Lecture three hours / Lab two hours per week.   Passing Math 6L satisfies the ELM requirement.

Math 6D  Entry Level Mathematics
This is a self-paced course of independent study.  Students review the material on their own and come in to take at least one test per week by appointment.  This course can be taken in place of Math 6L for students with ELM scores of 46 or 48 who are self-motivated and disciplined.   Passing Math 6D satisfies the ELM requirement.
