Remember that Midterm 2 is this Thursday and will cover chapters 5, 6 and 7. Tomorrow we'll spend the whole class reviewing these chapters. As before, you are allowed to bring a 3 x 5 inch index card with your notes to the midterm. Calculators, however, are not allowed.
Contrary to what I may have said, we will have one more furlough day this semester: November 5 (Thursday). There will be no class that day.
And lastly, I will have extra office hours next Wednesday, October 28, from 12 to 1 PM.
For more information on furloughs, click here.
Oh, and since Sept. 22 is a furlough day, (paper) Homework 4 is actually due on September 24.
Also, "paper" Homework 4 has been posted and is due on September 22.
It's the beginning of the fourth week of the semester and I'm surprised to see that out of 42 students in this course, only 34 have registered on MyMathLab. Today I changed the settings to allow registration until September 16 (Wednesday). After that I will close the course and those who have not registered will lose 5% of their grade. So please, if you haven't signed up yet, hurry up!
Another announcement: tomorrow, September 8 (due to a specialist exam I'm giving), my office hours will be from 1:30 to 2:30. Sorry for the inconvenience.
Finally, quiz 2 will on Thursday, September 17. It will cover sections 4-1, 4-2 and 4-3.
Rememeber that Quiz 1 will be this Thursday.
There's a typo below: Quiz 1 will cover section 3-1. Sorry about the confusion.
So far only 13 students are enrolled in this course on MyMathLab. If you haven't enrolled yet, please make sure to do it as soon as possible!
As of this writing, the class is completely full. This means that I will not be able to add anyone unless some students don't show up the first week of class or withdraw from the class. I will reassess the situation on Tuesday, September 1 and if space becomes available, start giving out add codes. The following categories of students have priority: graduating seniors and students who need 12 units because of financial aid, scholarships or visas (international students) as long as they have the appropriate documentation. Regularly enrolled students have priority over open university students.
Also, you can purchase the textbook as an E-book. Here is some information from the publisher on how to do that. To access the SJSU Math Portal created by Pearson, go to

And finally, to learn how to claim a tax credit for your textbooks (via the American Opportunity Tax Credit), check this handout.

It is important to recognize that these days off are not holidays. Instead, they are concrete examples of how massive state budget cuts have consequences for you as students and for me as a faculty member.
The CSU has suffered chronic underfunding for at least 10 years. This year the budget cuts are the worst in the history of our university system - 584 million dollars or 20% of our budget.
The CSU administration is attempting to deal with these cuts with huge increases in your student fees (32%), eliminations of your classes, and lay-offs of faculty and other university employees.
In addition to paying higher fees, you will be affected by reduced services and classes. The library will have shorter hours. Many campus support services will be decreased or eliminated. It will be more difficult to get signatures to meet deadlines. Classes you need may have been cut from the class schedule or are full.
If you would like to take action, or simply learn more, I strongly recommend you contact the California Faculty Association on campus.
