Strategy for solving word problems

1.  Read the problem very carefully.
Take note of all quantities that are given and quantities you are trying to find.
Make sure that all units are consistent.  For example, if all lengths are measured in the same units, say miles, then speed must be measured in miles per unit time.
2.  Draw a picture, if appropriate, and assign some variables.  Label the sketch.
3.  Use math formulas or previous knowledge to relate the unknown and the known quantities.
4.  Use algebraic skills to solve the problem.
5.  Check your answer.
